Putting a Spring Back in Your Step
It’s time to say, ‘Goodbye Winter, hello Spring!’
| Many people feel that Spring is a time to get back outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. This can have a positive effect on your health and wellbeing, and in turn, make you more able to cope with stress and anxiety.
The trouble comes with actually taking that step outdoors. For those of us who have been shielding due to covid, looking after housebound loved ones or who feel isolated from the world outside, the idea of leaving the house can seem daunting. If you are unable to leave the person you care for, it may be that family member or friend could help so you can get out for an hour or two. If there is no one who can help, maybe a sitting service would be worth considering. This is something we look at as part of a carer’s assessment. If you are anxious about leaving the house or don’t like doing things on your own, there are lots of options to help build your confidence and meet new people, including:
Whatever you do, getting out and about in the fresh air is one of the best ways of improving your health and wellbeing. It can be a fantastic way to relieve stress and help you feel connected with the world and your local community. If you would like to discuss this further or to find out more about ways Portsmouth Carers Service can support you, contact us in whichever way best suits you. Call: 02392 851 864 |
Meet the Team
Knowing who you’re talking to can help you feel more comfortable
First Name: Gina
What do you do at the Carers Centre?
As a development officer the main part my role is to raise awareness of our service and the support available for carers in Portsmouth, both with carers themselves and with health and social care and voluntary organisations in the city. I listen to carers, understand what support they need and work with carers and local organisations to look for opportunities to develop our service. Ensuring people who are caring for someone know where to find information and support and that what we offer is relevant and helpful.
I also support carers directly providing information, a listening ear or a carers assessment, which can help them to think about what will be helpful to them to feel supported when caring for someone.
What do you like about working at the Carers Centre? Meeting people – I really enjoy talking to people about their life experiences past and present. Everyone’s lives are so different and people who may think of themselves as having led a very ordinary life have sometimes lived through or experienced the most extraordinary things.
Name three of your character traits? Optimistic, inquisitive, and energetic.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working? I enjoy going to the theatre and spending time with family the beach. We’re really lucky to have some great local theatres, large and small with the chance to see some fantastic plays and musicals. If the sun is out our family will be heading for the beach – we have also been spotted on Christmas morning having a quick dip!
Favourite quote? A Bette Davis quote from now a film called Now, Voyager “Don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars”. This quote speaks to me of the spirit of my parents’ generation who grew up in the great depression and lived through the second world war, always making the best of things and appreciating the good things around us.
Cycling Without Age Portsmouth
Would you like to get out of the house and meet new people?
Loneliness is something that affects many and is caused by many things. Like national lockdowns, financial constraints or the loss of family. Cycling Without Age aims to alleviate social isolation by offering community members free trike rides in Portsmouth. Often this leads to meeting new people and making new friends!
Regular rider, Pessi, talks about what led to her to using Cycling Without Age:
“When my son passed away, I was home – completely bed ridden more or less for five years. Not eating, not sleeping. Then, when my husband died two years ago during COVID, I wasn’t able to have a proper funeral for him or see family. It was very distressing. It gets you out in the fresh year and the volunteers are great. We have some great chats and they take me to the cemetery to visit my husband and son, fetching and carrying the water and plants and bits I need. It’s helped a lot. I have made friends, and sometimes we go out on the bikes together. I think social prescribing can help people a lot. Especially people like me or don’t have good mobility and are living on their own.”
